Triskell Interactive, the developer behind 2023's Pharaoh: A New Era, is returning to original IP creation alongside publisher Dotemu. While their new mythological city-builder Theos: Cities of Myth won’t launch in full until November 4, you can get an early taste of it starting today with a three-chapter Athens demo on Steam.

Set in a reimagined Ancient Greece, Theos gives you the ability to build your polis the way you want—as long as you follow the will of the people, that is. And the gods will be watching. In this alt-universe, gods and mortals coexist on the streets. In the demo, you choose between Athena and Dionysus as your patron deity—with Hera, Ares, and three more Olympians confirmed for a roster of seven in the full release. Each god brings their own demands and city-shaping blessings, which you have to juggle alongside the desires of the populace and visiting historical luminaries like Socrates and Aristotle.

If you liked Pharaoh: A New Era or the late-'90s classics that inspired it, Theos: Cities of Myth should be right in your wheelhouse. It feels like a spiritual successor to 2000's Zeus: Master of Olympus—which was developed by original Pharaoh studio Impressions Games—complete with a central Sanctuary that grows alongside your city.

However, Triskell has baked in a lot of modernization, most notably retiring the infamous "roadblock puzzles" that have defined the subgenre since the Caesar III and Pharaoh days. Instead of trapping walkers in closed loops, you can now manually customize patrol routes and dispatch emergency services like firefighters directly to hazards. Even better, after Pharaoh: A New Era opted for simplified auto-resolved combat, Theos reintroduces full real-time battles to defend your borders and conquer rival Greek rulers.

Theos: Cities of Myth looks poised to deliver the modernized Zeus successor fans have wanted for years, striking a smart balance between classic isometric charm and much-needed quality-of-life overhauls. The three-chapter Athens demo is live on Steam now, with the full game launching on PC on November 4.
