Beat, Heart, Beat Carves Out Its Own Avant-Garde Niche in the Rhythm Game Renaissance

I’m a sucker for rhythm games, a love affair that started with PaRappa the Rapper and GuitarFreaks in the late 90s. This was long before Guitar Hero and Rock Band dominated the scene and dictated exactly what the genre should look and play like. We’re finally far from that era. While games like Stage Tour attest to the lingering nostalgia for peripheral-based games, players have become highly receptive to experimental rhythm hybrids. FPS rhythm shooters and roguelikes like Crypt of the Necrodancer shattered the old mold, clearing the stage for weirder, wilder concepts.

In Beat, Heart, Beat, you play as Peccori on a journey to reach their withering heart. What does that mean? I’ve played the game, and I'm still not entirely sure—and that’s not a complaint. The game features a bizarre, absurdist world brought to life through a chaotic mixed-media aesthetic that blends 2D animation, FMV, and digital collage art. It’s strange, slightly unsettling, and pairs perfectly with the game's original alt-rock and grunge soundtrack.

At first glance, gameplay looks like a standard 2D action-sidescroller where you attack on the beat. In reality, it’s much closer to a Guitar Hero track, as there is really only one correct way to approach the "combat" in each level. The enemies are the notes. You can jump, and attack forward, up, and down.

That might sound simple, but actions dynamically change based on context. A jump becomes a jump attack if there’s a target above you, forcing you to attack downwards to hit the next beat. Attacking forward while in the air keeps you airborne to clear gaps.

It creates a system where encounters can dynamically alter the chart or throw new visual curveballs at you as you go.

Beat, Heart, Beat is entering Early Access, meaning it has some way to go before hitting 1.0. According to the developer, it will stay in the oven for about a year. Right now, it features roughly 30 percent of the planned Story Mode content. However, the inclusion of a custom Level Editor and full Steam Workshop support gives the game endless replayability for those who blast through the story.

I’ll be keeping a close eye on Beat, Heart, Beat as it heads toward the finish line. It’s an incredibly fascinating intersection of midwest emo grunge, rhythm mechanics, and avant-garde art. The highly specific—and punishingly addictive—gameplay loop makes it a unique standout in the indie rhythm space.
